I love history, I love learning about history,...

thepoetproject:

I love history, I love learning about history, I love seeing how far we’ve come from history. When it comes to issues regarding Sikhs and 1984 I hear folks argue to ‘leave things in the past, so we can move on’. I understand their perspective, you can’t beat a dead horse, what has happened, has happened. Personally my education on the events that took place in Amritsar & Delhi 28 years ago has increased dramatically in the past 4 years due to the efforts of various individuals and organizations. That education has directly influenced the person I am today, and had things been left in the past, as some folks wished, I would have continued in life superiorly misinformed.

Now the issue with History is, most folks want the short version. Conflicts and wars are great history talking points, because they’re easy to share: “They fought them, starting on this date, and ending on this date, they fought because of…” The reality is the short version only leads to more misinformation, and the stories are dramatically more complicated than any side wishes to admit. The truth of the matter is Harmander Sahib in Amritsar and the Sikh population have been through quite a few major attacks: 1737, 1757, 1762, 1955, and 1984-1994. In 1762, it is estimated that between a third to half of the ENTIRE Sikh Population was wiped out (it was known as the Sikh Holocaust of 1762). Each time, the population bounced back, fought back, and rebuilt. With 1984 though, that’s still fresh, and the fact that no one has been brought to “justice” for the crimes committed in the horrific aftermath of Indira Gandhi’s assassination is enough fuel to keep that fire burning

But what is justice? Who determines what dosage of consequence someone else deserves for their actions? How do you serve justice within a system of law to individuals who operate outside of it? Do we turn to the police force that either helped with the hunt, or looked the other way? Do we appeal to governments who themselves were built on murder and exploitation? Do we boycott Amitabh Bachan films? Do we take it into our own hands, so kids can have a new ‘hero’ to put as their Facebook profile pic for a few weeks before moving on?

There is no justice, there’s just us. And each of us has a different definition of what a ‘sense of Justice’ is. We as individuals are guided by our self interests, just as those who have done harm to us. When you study history, you see that the vicious circle of ‘us & them’ is rarely broken and the right side is usually the side left standing.

The futility and necessity of remembering the events of 1984 are personal, and personally I’m glad there is an effort to remember because the education I received on those topics touch home and helped me expand my empathy to causes that I saw parallels with (Palestinian conflict, Sri Lanka, Darfur, Aboriginal struggles etc). That connection with others wouldn’t have existed for me until I saw the picture of the widows of ’84, and how much they looked like my mother. Most recently I’ve been challenged to educate myself even further back, at a time when the people of region were all unified against a common oppressor, the British, and how effectively they left us in pieces when they made their exit. These stories aren’t unique to India, they happen around the world, the consistency in the 15 000 years of recorded human history is the human nature involved. As Mark Twain says “History doesn’t repeat, but it does rhyme”

I’ve done a few tracks regarding the 1984, and I’ve always made sure they didn’t give off a ‘victim’ vibe and finger point, but rather a vibe of resilience, survival, love and celebration of life. I know people who had been affected so deeply by those events, they turned their life around for the better and shed a lot of destructive behavior. I’m also aware of folks who did the opposite, and used these events to concentrate their personal frustrations and spread hate.

I personally take the events as a reminder that we, as human beings, are quite a unique creature; our motivations for destroying have little resemblance to any other life form on this planet, and we do a great job of justifying ourselves.

Life is a gift, and if you can read this, you’ve been afforded a privileged length to your life already. Listen, Learn, Love, Laugh, Let Go… educate yourself on all the ugly in the world and welcome every emotion that comes with it. Those emotions are real, and they’re raw, use those emotions to create and contribute something in history that future generations can celebrate.

The Reichstag building in Berlin is the seat of the Bundestag, the lower house of the legislature. Originally built in 1884, it was heavily damaged during the infamous Reichstagsbrand of 1933, when the Nazis set it on fire. It was restored after the war and in 1999, to celebrate unified Germany, received its now-iconic glass dome, designed by British “starchitect” Sir Norman Foster.

In addition to being visually and symbolically interesting, the dome is an energy efficiency wonder. It serves to both light and ventilate the parliamentary chamber beneath it. A cone covered in 360 funnel-shaped mirrors descends through the dome to reflect natural light into the chamber below. The mirrors also allow visitors inside the dome to see what is going on in the chamber below.

To avoid direct sunlight or unneeded heat, an electronic sun-shade is programmed to rotate around the dome to block the sun based on the season and time of day.

Air is ventilated out of the chamber through the center of the mirrored cone, where it passes through a heat recovery mechanism that collects remaining heat before the air leaves through a round opening at the top of the dome.

Three hundred square meters of solar panels on the surrounding roof, plus two combined heat and power units that run on German biodiesel, provide 82% of the energy for the Reichstag and surrounding buildings.

Waste heat is stored as hot water in a reservoir 300 meters below the building, and can be pumped up to provide heating in winter or power an absorption cooling plant in summer.

These innovative energy efficiency measures have helped reduce the building’s CO2 emissions from 7000 tons to between 400 and 1000 tons annually. The building itself is like a power plant for the government quarter. A beautiful and iconic landmark, the Reichstag dome is symbolic of the German government’s commitment to clean energy and environmental sustainability.
